Stefán Karl Stefánsson
Stefán Karl Stefánsson (10 July 1975 – 21 August 2018) was an Icelandic actor and singer, widely recognized for his portrayal of Robbie Rotten, the antagonist of the children's television series *LazyTown*. His career began in 1994 at age 19 as a puppeteer for television, during which time he also studied at the Drama Academy of Iceland. Dissatisfied with the limited perspectives of Icelandic drama standards, he recalled a high school principal who told him that "acting is not about making faces and changing your face," a view he rejected. He was later invited by Icelandic gymnast Magnús Scheving to perform in the second *LazyTown* stage play. Scheving had created the plays to encourage physical activity among Iceland's youth. Stefán Karl explained that Scheving wanted children to be healthier, playing the fitness-focused Sportacus, while he played Robbie Rotten, a character who preferred staying indoors. After the musical's success, Nickelodeon partnered with the creators to produce the first 40 television episodes, with a dedicated studio built in Iceland. Initially knowing no English when *LazyTown* began in the early 2000s, Stefán Karl quickly became fluent.
In his personal life, Stefán Karl had attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, Tourette syndrome, obsessive–compulsive disorder, and dyslexia. He lived in Los Angeles with his wife, Steinunn Ólína Þorsteinsdóttir, and their three daughters and one son. In June 2018, he was awarded the Order of the Falcon. He was the nephew of actor and comedian Magnús Ólafsson and cousin of former footballer Hörður Magnússon.
In October 2016, Stefán Karl announced he had been diagnosed with bile duct cancer. A GoFundMe campaign, created by *LazyTown* head writer Mark Valenti, covered his living costs when he became too ill to work. The campaign gained popularity through YouTube parodies of his work, which linked to the page and turned songs like "We Are Number One" and "The Mine Song" into internet memes. In August 2017, he stated he was in remission, clarifying that while his metastases had been removed after successful liver surgery in June 2017, he still had the disease and had refused further adjuvant therapy.
