Last updated

"Strangers on a Treadmill" is the fourth episode of the second season of the American sitcom Modern Family and the 28th episode overall. It originally aired on October 13, 2010 on ABC and was written by Danny Zuker and directed by Scott Ellis. The episode became the first in the series to be the highest-rated scripted program of the week in the 18–49 demographic.

Plot

Phil writes jokes for the Southern California Annual Realtors Banquet (SCARB) that he is hosting, but Claire expects him to bomb. Cameron decides to work out wearing bike shorts, which Mitchell dislikes. While exercising, Claire and Mitchell agree to tell each other's spouse about their bad habit, inspired by Strangers on a Train. Mitchell goes to the Dunphy house to tell Phil his jokes are bad but cannot after seeing Phil's sad face.

Claire tells Cameron his bike shorts look terrible, causing Cameron to cry in the hallway. Later, Claire calls Mitchell to ask why he did not follow through; Cameron overhears and becomes upset again. To prove their relationship can endure anything, Mitchell prepares to shave off his beard, but after cutting only a small part, Cameron says he loves the beard. They reconcile but soon argue again.

At the SCARB, Claire hides Phil's cue cards in her purse. Phil improvises his speech and his jokes are a huge success. At home, Phil tells Claire he knows she took the cards and thanks her for looking out for him. Meanwhile, Gloria reminds Jay about a co-worker's quinceañera.

Jay initially declines but changes his mind to prove a point. At the event, Jay has Manny ask everyone's name so Jay can win his argument with Gloria. Gloria realizes they are at an engagement party next door to the quinceañera, but Jay will not listen. He gives a speech and offers to pay the bar tab, then tries to stop the engaged couple from kissing, thinking it is a father and daughter dancing.

At the Dunphy house, Haley helps Alex become more popular by teaching her social maneuvering. Alex takes control of a phone call with a girl named McKenzie but panics, says she loves homework, and then says "I love you" to McKenzie.

Production and cultural references

The episode was written by Danny Zuker, his fourth writing credit for the series, and directed by Scott Ellis, his second directing credit after "The Kiss". It aired on October 13, 2010.

A live table read took place on August 3, 2010, and Eric Stonestreet revealed plot details at the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards. The title and Mitchell and Claire's plan reference the film Strangers on a Train. Phil's line "I know it was you Claire" is an homage to The Godfather Part II.

Reception

The episode was viewed by 11.344 million households and received a 4.8 rating/13% share among viewers aged 18–49, meaning it was seen by 4.8% of all 18- to 49-year-olds and 13% of those watching television at the time. This marked a 4% increase from the previous episode, "Earthquake". It was the most-watched scripted show of the week among adults 18–49, a first for the series, and the eighteenth most-watched show among all viewers. Reviews were mostly positive.

Joel Keller of TV Squad felt the two main stories "clicked" but the secondary stories "didn't quite make it", though they had "fun moments"; he praised the writers for giving Alex and Haley more screen time. Donna Bowman of The A.V. Club gave a B+, calling Luke the best supporting character and Phil's successful speech "one of the best moments this show has produced". James Poniewozik of Time called it "not a remarkable episode, but one with several nice moments".

Lesley Savage of Entertainment Weekly gave a positive review, noting that the title sequence after four minutes washed away tension with laughter. Matt Roush of TV Guide wrote that "No show had me laughing out loud more this week (as usual) than the brilliantly structured Modern Family". Julie Bowen won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for this episode.
