Commentary
The official may have served Herod Antipas or the emperor, and his ethnicity is uncertain. This healing follows Jesus' conversation with the Samaritan woman about eternal life and precedes his statement on giving life to whomever he wishes. A similar episode appears in Matthew and Luke, where a centurion's servant is healed. Some scholars treat these as the same miracle, others as separate events, and some view John's account as an adaptation of the Synoptic story.
