Offseason

The Marlins began building their roster well before the 1993 season. On February 14, 1992, they signed Édgar Rentería as an amateur free agent. In the June 1992 draft, the club selected catcher Charles Johnson in the first round (28th overall), signing him on November 5. The 1992 MLB expansion draft took place on November 17, 1992, with both leagues making players available; each existing team could protect fifteen players initially, with additional protections in later rounds. On that day, the Marlins traded Eric Helfand and a player to be named later to the Oakland Athletics for Walt Weiss, completing the deal by sending Scott Baker on November 20. Also on November 17, Greg Hibbard was traded to the Chicago Cubs for Alex Arias and Gary Scott, and Danny Jackson was dealt to the Philadelphia Phillies for Joel Adamson and Matt Whisenant. Free-agent signings followed: Charlie Hough on December 8, Terry McGriff on December 9, and Rick Renteria on February 20, 1993. The Marlins and Colorado Rockies, both set to debut in 1993, were allowed to participate in all rounds of the June 1992 amateur draft; the Marlins selected 28th overall, with Charles Johnson their top pick. Of the 50 amateur free agents chosen, only Johnson and pitcher Andy Larkin reached the major leagues. The Marlins affiliated with two minor league clubs during 1992 to develop drafted players.

Regular season

During the regular season, the Marlins played only 35 day games, the fewest in the majors, due to the summer heat. On May 22, 1993, Kevin Elster was signed as a free agent, but he was released on June 4. Mike Jeffcoat was signed as a free agent on June 9. A notable trade occurred on June 24, when the Marlins acquired Gary Sheffield and Rich Rodriguez from the San Diego Padres, sending Trevor Hoffman, José Martínez, and Andrés Berumen to San Diego. Three days later, on June 27, Henry Cotto and Jeff Darwin were acquired from the Seattle Mariners for Dave Magadan. The team alternated wins and losses through the early schedule, including a 2–1 win over the Padres on April 10 and a 6–4 victory at Candlestick Park against the Giants on April 14.
