Aguascalientes
Small Mexican state with high density and rapid growth.
Last updated
It is the 27th most populated state and the 29th largest by area, but the fourth by population density.[1] Aguascalientes is one of the 32 federated entities that make up Mexico.[2]
Key facts and history
The state was founded as a town on October 22, 1575, by Juan de Montoro and eleven other people, following an order from King Felipe II.[3][4] Historically, the state was known for its railroad, textile, and wine-making industries.[5] Mean annual temperature is around 17 to 18 °C, with May and June being the hottest months.[6] The San Marcos Fair, first organized on April 25, 1828, is the largest national fair in Latin America and one of the 10 largest in the world.[7]
Average annual rainfall is low at 526 mm, with most precipitation occurring in the summer and dry winters.[8]
What the cited sources add
The founding document "La fundación de Aguascalientes" records that the original settlement was named Villa de la Ascensión de las Aguascalientes.[9] The same source notes that in 1587 the town had only two vecinos (residents) and 16 soldiers, and that a Chichimeca attack in December 1593 devastated it.[9] A 2019 El Economista article states that over the previous decade, Aguascalientes had the highest economic growth in the country, with an average annual rate of 5.0 percent.[10]
