The Tigres de Quintana Roo, also known as the Quintana Roo Tigers, are a professional baseball club in the Mexican League’s Southern Division (Zona Sur), based in Cancún, Quintana Roo, Mexico. Since their founding, the team has claimed 12 league championships (1955, 1960, 1965, 1966, 1992, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2011, 2013, and 2015) and 18 division titles.
The franchise began in Mexico City in 1955 as the Tigres del México, founded by industrialist Alejo Peralta and later owned by his son, Carlos Peralta. The team played in Mexico City through the 2001 season, then moved briefly to Puebla as the Tigres de la Angelópolis before relocating to Cancún. In 2017, an ownership group that included MLB All-Star pitcher Fernando Valenzuela purchased the team.
The Tigres share a long-standing rivalry, known as the Guerra Civil (Civil War), with their former crosstown opponents, the Diablos Rojos del México. **Franchise history** The Tigres debuted on 14 April 1955 at the Julio Molina ballpark in Mérida, Yucatán, under manager George Genovese. In 1966, the team toured Japan, losing all 13 games against Japanese teams.
**Tigres Capitalinos** From their start until 2001, the team played in Mexico City, known as the Tigres del México or Tigres Capitalinos. Their home fields were Parque del Seguro Social and, from 2000, Foro Sol (after the old park was demolished for a shopping mall). In their final two seasons in Mexico City, the Tigres won back-to-back championships, defeating the Diablos Rojos del México.
**Move to Puebla** In 2002, the team relocated to Puebla and changed its name to Tigres de la Angelópolis.
**50th anniversary season** For the 2005 season, the club designed an alternate logo to mark 50 years of competition. That year, the Tigres fielded only Mexican players, making the championship especially meaningful. The season was named “Ing. Alejo Peralta” in memory of the founder.
**New home for 2007** After the 2006 season, club president Carlos Peralta announced a move to Cancún, Quintana Roo. The team was renamed the Quintana Roo Tigres and began playing at Beto Ávila Stadium.
