The Tecolotes were originally founded in 1940 as the Tecolotes de Nuevo Laredo, playing only in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas. Their first game was on March 30, 1940 against Unión Laguna. In 1985, the team began playing games on both sides of the border in Nuevo Laredo and Laredo, Texas. The franchise was sold and moved to Tijuana after the 2003 season, becoming the Potros de Tijuana for the 2004 season.
