History

PSYCHLOPS was designed by a group led by British academic general practitioner Mark Ashworth and designed by Jeremy Christey, inspired by the self-report inventory MYMOP. The measure takes a trans-therapeutic approach, focusing on three phases: re-moralisation (wellbeing), remediation (problem improvement), and rehabilitation (functioning and cause improvement). It measures mental health from a client-centred perspective.

Use in mental health care

PSYCHLOPS is a self-completed mental health outcome measure used in primary care or community care settings. It assesses mental health problems, quality of life, social functioning, and wellbeing. By comparing scores before, during, and after talking therapy, it calculates a change score indicating improvement or deterioration. As a patient-generated outcome measure, it relies on items selected by patients rather than pre-specified ones, producing free-text qualitative data.

The World Health Organization has adopted PSYCHLOPS in two mental health programmes, Programme Management Plus (PM+) and Self Help Plus (SH+), which use locally trained workers in conflict-affected countries. A children's version, PSYCHLOPS Kids, allows children to identify their own worries. One reported limitation is the reliance on school staff support.

Procedure

The individual completes the PSYCHLOPS questionnaire, which includes a sequence of questions about their greatest and least worries. These concerns are scored on a six-point scale. The answers and scores evaluate perceived change in problems following counselling or talking therapy. An outcome score is calculated from the before, during, and after questionnaires.
