When history fractured after Boris traveled back to 1969 to kill K, J became the only person retaining his memories of the original timeline. Lore & Background
In 2012, Agent J investigated the escape of Boris the Animal, who vowed revenge on K for an injury sustained in 1969. After Boris killed present-day K and altered the timeline, J faced strange side effects while Agent O revealed that K had previously deployed the ArcNet to stop the Boglodites. Realizing history was fractured, J sought out Jeffrey Price to obtain a time machine. He traveled back to July 15, 1969, where he was initially arrested by young Agent K. Convinced of his mission, J and K tracked clues to a Factory directed by undercover agent Andy Warhol, leading them to Griffin, an Archanan with clairvoyant abilities.
Griffin revealed that only K could attach the ArcNet to the Apollo 11 rocket. This journey forced J to confront the truth about K's past: that K had killed Colonel James Darrell Edwards Jr., who was actually J's father. Witnessing this event from afar, J realized his younger self's presence in 1969 prevented him from forgetting K.
Reader's Guide
James Darrell Edwards III operates as Agent J, the partner to Agent K within the Men in Black organization. His role expanded significantly during the 2012 crisis when he became the sole guardian of the correct timeline after Boris the Animal altered history. Key moments include his recruitment of young K, reliance on Griffin's visions at Shea Stadium, and the execution of a mission at Cape Canaveral involving the Apollo 11 rocket. J must navigate complex time-travel mechanics, utilizing technology from Jeffrey Price to traverse decades. His effectiveness relies on bridging the gap between his street-smart background and high-level intergalactic threats. He ultimately proves that maintaining the timeline requires personal sacrifice, as seen when he accepted K's execution of Colonel Edwards.
