Salbutamol, also called albuterol and best known by the brand Ventolin, is a drug that widens the medium and large airways in the lungs. It works as a short-acting β2 adrenergic receptor agonist, relaxing the smooth muscle in the airways. Doctors prescribe it for asthma—including acute attacks and exercise-induced bronchoconstriction—as well as for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It can also lower high blood potassium levels. The World Health Organization lists it as an essential medicine.
The inhaled form, delivered via inhaler or nebuliser, typically starts working within 15 minutes and lasts two to six hours. It also comes as a pill, liquid, or intravenous solution. Enantiomer separation and purity control can be done with thin-layer chromatography.
The chemical synthesis often starts with a Fries rearrangement of aspirin, though many other methods exist. Salbutamol was discovered in 1966 by a team led by David Jack at the Allen and Hanburys lab in Ware, England, and launched as Ventolin in 1969.
