Wu Lien-teh was a Malayan physician whose pioneering work in public health, especially during the Manchurian plague of 1910–11, led to the invention of the Wu mask, the direct forerunner of the modern N95 respirator. Born in Penang, one of the Straits Settlements under British colonial rule, he was the son of a Hoisanese goldsmith who had recently immigrated from Taishan, China, and a mother of Hakka heritage who was a second-generation Peranakan. After early education at the Penang Free School, Wu won the Queen’s Scholarship and entered Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 1896, becoming the first medical student of Chinese descent to study there. He excelled academically, winning nearly all available prizes, and completed his clinical training at St Mary’s Hospital, London, followed by studies at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine under Sir Ronald Ross, the Pasteur Institute, Halle University, and the Selangor Institute. Returning to the Straits Settlements in 1903, he joined the Institute for Medical Research in Kuala Lumpur as its first research student, but faced a two-tier colonial medical system that reserved top posts for British nationals. He researched beri-beri and roundworms before entering private practice in Penang. An outspoken social commentator, Wu co-edited *The Straits Chinese Magazine* and founded the Anti-Opium Association in Penang, organizing a nationwide anti-opium conference in 1906 attended by some 3,000 people. This activism drew opposition from opium trade interests, leading to a conviction for possessing a small amount of tincture of opium. In 1908, he accepted an offer from Grand Councillor Yuan Shikai to become Vice Director of the Imperial Army Medical College in Tianjin. During the 1910–11 pneumonic plague epidemic in Manchuria, which killed 60,000 people, Wu performed a postmortem on a Japanese victim—a practice then uncommon in China—and determined the disease spread through the air. He invented a face mask, later known as the Wu mask, and oversaw the production and distribution of 60,000 masks in a subsequent outbreak. He also initiated quarantines, disinfected buildings, and, crucially, obtained imperial sanction to cremate plague victims, as the frozen ground prevented burial. Wu Lien-teh was born in Penang, one of the three towns of the Straits Settlements, to a Hoisanese father and a Hakka mother. He returned to the Straits Settlements in 1903, married Ruth Shu-chiung Huang, and moved to China in 1907. In the winter of 1910, Wu was instructed by the Foreign Office of the Imperial Qing court to travel to Harbin to investigate an unknown disease that killed 99.9% of its victims — the beginning of the large pneumonic plague epidemic of Manchuria and Mongolia, which ultimately claimed 60,000 lives. He conducted a postmortem on a Japanese woman who had died of the plague, determined via autopsy that the plague was spreading by air, and invented the face mask that became the precursor of the N95 respirator. He initiated quarantine, arranged for buildings to be disinfected, and had the old plague hospital burned down and replaced. He asked for imperial sanction to cremate plague victims, soaking bodies in paraffin and burning them on pyres — the turning point of the epidemic. He chaired the International Plague Conference in Mukden in April 1911, a historic event attended by scientists from the US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary, the Netherlands, Russia, Mexico, and China. He later presented a plague research paper at the International Congress of Medicine, London in August 1911, published in The Lancet.
