History
The Pirinenc Català, also called the Cavall Pirinenc Català, is a heavy horse breed from Catalonia in northeastern Spain, raised almost entirely for its meat, though it can also be used for pulling loads. These horses are hardy, well-suited to mountain conditions, and live outdoors year-round with little human care, grazing on Pyrenean and Pre-Pyrenean pastures. The breed originated from heavy horses brought into Catalonia starting in the early 1900s, many from France, including Ardennes, Boulonnais, Breton, Comtois, Percheron, and Poitevin stock.
These were crossed with local horses, including the last remnants of the old Catalan, an Iberian riding breed similar to the Mallorquín, Menorquín, Lusitano, and Pura Raza Española, which disappeared into this heavy horse population and has been considered extinct since the early twentieth century. The Generalitat de Catalunya published a breed standard in 2008 and created a stud-book. In 2011, the Federació d'Associacions de Criadors de Cavall Pirinenc Català, a federation of breeder associations, was approved to manage it, and a breeding program followed in 2021.
By 2023, there were 587 stallions and an unspecified number of mares, owned by 391 breeders, all within Catalonia. In 2025, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization listed the breed's conservation status as at risk or endangered.
Characteristics
The horses derive from a wide variety of origins and so form a highly variable population. In general, they share three principal characteristics: they are heavily built or massive; they are long in the body but not tall; and they have a concave facial profile.
The coat may be of any colour, but is usually some shade of chestnut; the principal colours listed in the breed standard are chestnut, bay and black; roan and grey are permitted, but not prioritised. Height at the withers is between , and body weights are usually some . Mares are fertile and are quick to reach sexual maturity; they give birth easily and display good maternal qualities.
Use
The Pirinenc Català is generally bred only for horse-meat; foals are milk-fed for the first six months, when they are taken from the dam and sold to be fattened for slaughter, which is usually at about a year old. A few are sold for draught work, usually in southern Catalonia or in Valencia.
