Lore & Background

The MP4/4 was a revolutionary design that won 15 of 16 races in 1988, securing the constructors' title and a historic 1-2 finish in the drivers' championship for Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost. As of 2025, the 1988 MP4/4 remains one of the most dominant cars in Formula One history, and McLaren also achieved a 1-2 in the drivers' championship that same season.

In Their Own Story

The air at the Japanese Grand Prix is thick with humidity and anticipation as the McLaren MP4/4s line up on the grid, their papaya orange livery glowing under the floodlights. Senna takes pole position, his focus absolute, while Prost sits just behind him in the sister car. As the lights go out, the Honda V6 roars to life, a sound that echoes through the paddock as a declaration of intent. They cross the finish line one-two, sealing another chapter in a season where failure was not an option.

Reader's Guide

The MP4/5 debuted in 1989, the first year naturally-aspirated engines were compulsory. Honda built a 3.5-litre V10 engine. The car used a carbon-fibre monocoque from Hercules Aerospace. Early handling issues were improved by Honda refining throttle response. Brakes switched from McLaren to Brembo from the third round. A transverse gearbox was introduced at the British Grand Prix. Honda supplied eight engines per race and introduced two engine revisions late in the season. The MP4/5B for 1990 featured redesigned front and rear wings, reprofiled rear bodywork, larger radiators, and new venturi tunnels. A test mule MP4/5C with a Honda V12 was tested by Allan McNish in 1990.
