The Magic Government

A kingdom that worships spells, policed by knights, and built to crush anyone who can't cast.

The Magic Government is the overarching state apparatus of the Mashle world, a society in which every facet of life—infrastructure, economy, law, and social hierarchy—runs on magical ability. Where our world relies on electricity, combustion, and computation, this one channels mana through spells, enchanted artifacts, and the innate talent of its citizens. The government enforces a rigid order in which the strength of one's magic determines one's station, and those born without it are, by default, at the very bottom of the social ladder.

At its institutional heart sits the Easton Magic Academy, the premier training ground that feeds the state's military and administrative ranks, while the Magic Knights function as the armed enforcement arm of the crown. Together they form a closed loop: the academy produces the Knights, the Knights protect the state, and the state perpetuates the belief that magic is the sole legitimate source of power. Mash Burnedead, a young man with zero magical aptitude but absurd physical strength, is the living contradiction that this entire structure was designed to exclude.

Lore & Background

In the world of Mashle, magic is not a skill one learns so much as a birthright that sorts people into their place. The government has codified this into law, architecture, and daily routine. Bridges are held by sustained levitation spells; communication travels through enchanted relay crystals; even currency and contracts are sealed with sigils. To be born without a visible magical core is to be born into a category the state has no legal language for—effectively a non-person in the eyes of the system.

The Easton Magic Academy sits at the apex of this structure, serving as both a university and a recruitment pipeline. Students are ranked, tested, and pushed through a gauntlet of duels and trials that the state frames as meritocratic competition. In practice, it is a sorting mechanism: the talented are elevated into the Magic Knights and the civil service, while the weak are funneled into menial magical labor or quietly forgotten. The academy's internal 'Fate' system—where students wager their own magical futures against one another—mirrors the broader social contract that the government enforces: your power is your worth, and your worth is your right to rule.

The Magic Knights, the state's standing military, are drawn from the academy's top graduates. They wear distinctive uniforms, carry enchanted armaments, and answer to the crown's command. Their role is twofold: defend the kingdom from external threats and suppress any internal challenge to the magical order. A citizen who questions the hierarchy, or worse, who demonstrates a power the system cannot classify—like a man who punches a spell out of the air with his bare fist—becomes, in the government's eyes, an existential threat to the social contract itself.

Reader's Guide

The Magic Academy — Easton Campus The academy is a sprawling complex of enchanted halls, training grounds, and dormitories where students are sorted by magical aptitude. Classrooms are self-heating, blackboards rewrite themselves with the instructor's thoughts, and the dueling arenas are reinforced with layered barrier spells that can withstand a Category-5 impact. Students live under a strict code: no non-magical substitution in exams, no interference in another's 'Fate' match, and absolute obedience to the faculty. It matters to the plot because it is where Mash, the one student with no magic, is forced to compete on a field designed to exclude him.

The Magic Knights — State Military Housed in a fortified garrison district, the Knights are the government's sword. Their barracks are warded against infiltration, their armory holds weapons that channel the user's mana into devastating output, and their chain of command runs directly to the crown. They recruit exclusively from the academy's top tier. They matter because they represent the state's willingness to use force to preserve the magical hierarchy, and because Mash's existence forces them to confront a threat their enchanted weapons are not designed to counter.

The General Populace — The Enchanted City Beneath the academy and the garrison lies the everyday city: markets where merchants sell bottled spells, residential blocks where families maintain their homes with household magic, and the underclass who perform menial mana-labor for a fraction of a mage's wage. The government's surveillance is ambient—mana-signature checks at every checkpoint, enchanted ledgers tracking every transaction. It matters because it is the living proof that the system works, and the living proof that Mash's very presence is a crack in its foundation.
