Teleportation Magic

You can vanish in a flash, but you can't vanish from a hammer swing.

Teleportation Magic is a spatial-utility magic type recognized within the magical taxonomy of the Mashle world, where nearly every citizen channels some form of magical energy. In a society where magic is the default mode of power and the East Wall Magic Academy sorts students by their affinities, spatial-type magics occupy a prized but niche slot in the curriculum. Because Mash Burnedead possesses absolutely no magical ability, teleportation represents one of the many categories of magic he must defeat through sheer physicality, reflex, and his trusty war hammer. For the reader, it is a reminder that in Mashle's world, the most terrifying opponent is often the one who can simply not be where you expect them to be—and the most satisfying victory is the one where a boy with zero magic catches them anyway.

Lore & Background

In the Mashle world, magic is woven into every aspect of daily life: heating homes, transporting goods, powering industry, and, of course, warfare. The East Wall Magic Academy, the preeminent institution for young mages, categorizes students by their elemental and utility affinities. Spatial-type magic, including teleportation, sits among the more specialized branches. A caster who has trained in this field can fold the distance between two points, stepping from one location to another without traversing the space in between. In combat, this makes the user extraordinarily difficult to pin down; in utility, it allows rapid repositioning across a battlefield or through a city's streets.

The magic is not without cost or constraint. Caster reports in the academy's training halls suggest that repeated short-range hops drain concentration quickly, and the longer the jump, the greater the physical toll on the user's magical core. There is also a window of vulnerability: the instant before and after a teleport, the caster's focus is locked on the destination, leaving them momentarily unable to react to a new threat. Experienced opponents learn to exploit that half-second gap.

For Mash, a boy born into a world of magic with none of his own, teleportation is less a threat to be studied and more a problem to be solved with his fists. His philosophy is blunt: if you can move anywhere, I'll be faster. If you can vanish, I'll hit the space you were in before you leave. The academy's sparring records show him treating spatial magics not as puzzles to decode but as opponents to out-muscle, a stance that confounds mages who are used to being untouchable.

Reader's Guide

TELEPORTATION MAGIC — Spatial/Utility Wielded by: Mages with spatial affinity (various academy students and faculty). Mechanics: The caster locks onto a target point within range and folds the intervening space, repositioning their body instantaneously. Short-range hops (a few meters) are quick and low-cost; longer jumps demand sustained concentration and leave a brief recovery gap. Limits: The caster must maintain a clear mental image of the destination. Obstacles, magical interference, or a sudden change in the target area can cause a misfire, leaving the caster mid-fold and exposed. Repeated use in rapid succession fatigues the magical core. The 0.5-second window before and after the jump is the caster's most vulnerable moment.

MASH BURNEDead — COUNTER PROTOCOL Wielded by: Mash (zero magic; pure physicality). Hammer Sweep (Blind Arc): Mash does not track the teleporter. He reads the origin point—shoulder tension, the pre-jump exhale—and swings a wide arc at the space the caster just vacated. The displaced air and shockwave punish the repositioning window. Predictive Stance: Mash holds his hammer at a fixed, ready angle. If the opponent vanishes, he does not turn. He strikes the most probable re-entry vector based on the caster's previous pattern. Three patterns in, the teleporter is no longer unpredictable. Hammer Catch: In close quarters, Mash extends the hammer's shaft like a reach weapon. If the caster reappears within the shaft's radius, Mash simply closes his hand around the shaft and yanks them back into the swing. No magic required. Just grip strength and the audacity to grab someone out of thin air.

Weakness vs. Mash: Teleportation assumes the target is tracking you. Mash is not tracking you. He is hitting the room.
