Main characters
Dave McFly is the eldest of the three McFly children, with siblings Marty and Linda. In the initial 1985 timeline, before Marty's first time-travel journey, Dave is employed at Burger King. After Marty alters the past, Dave's life improves and he is seen wearing a suit while working as a white-collar employee for an accounting firm. A deleted scene from Back to the Future Part II depicts an alternate 1985 where, following George McFly's death and Lorraine's marriage to Biff Tannen, Dave becomes an alcoholic and a gambling addict.
Baines family
Dave McFly is the maternal grandson of Sam and Stella Baines. His mother, Lorraine, is one of their six children, making Dave a nephew to Milton, Sally, Toby, Joey, and Ellen Baines. Toby Baines, born in 1951, also sat silently at that dinner. Joey Baines, born in 1954, was Marty's favorite uncle in the early 1970s and later spent many years in Folsom Prison, failing to earn parole by October 25, 1985.
Strickland family
Dave McFly is a student at Hill Valley High School, where Stanford S. Strickland serves as principal. Strickland, also known as Gerald Strickland, is the grandson of Chief Marshal James Strickland of 1885 Hill Valley. He sternly reprimands students for slacking or liquor consumption, though he himself drinks alcohol at his desk. James Strickland was the chief marshal in 1885 and an ancestor of Stanford. In a deleted scene and the novelization, Strickland is killed by Buford Tannen; the Back to the Future game notes that James was shot and killed by Buford. Edna Strickland, sister of Stanford, was a reporter and Prohibition campaigner in 1931.
Other characters
Dave McFly does not directly interact with the characters in this section. Marvin Berry, a jazz musician, performed at the Enchantment Under The Sea dance and called his cousin Chuck Berry after hearing Marty play Johnny B. Goode. Otis Peabody, a farmer in 1955, planted pines on his land; after Marty crashed into his shed and flattened a sapling, Peabody was committed to an asylum claiming a space zombie wrecked his barn, and the mall later became Lone Pine Mall.
