Making and release
The series was announced on July 24, 2011, and produced by Nippon Television, VAP, Shueisha, and Madhouse.[1][5] Five different ending themes were used, including "Just Awake" by Fear, and Loathing in Las Vegas and songs by Yuzu and Galneryus.[6][7] Hiroshi Kōjina served as director, with series composition by Atsushi Maekawa and Tsutomu Kamishiro, character designs by Takahiro Yoshimatsu, and music composition by Yoshihisa Hirano.[5] The voice actors for the 2011 adaptation were all new, not reprising roles from the earlier anime.[5]
Nippon TV first broadcast the show on Sunday mornings from October 2, 2011; later, from October 8, 2013, it moved to a Tuesday late-night slot at 1:29 am.[5] Crunchyroll offered English-subtitled episodes one hour after their broadcast in Japan, available in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.[8] Animax Asia started showing the series on April 24, 2012.[8] Viz Media announced their licensing of the series on October 9, 2015, and later put out DVD/Blu-ray sets featuring an English dub.[8]
The series first aired on Adult Swim's Toonami block on April 17, 2016; Madman Entertainment later made it available on AnimeLab for Australia and New Zealand, while Funimation began streaming it in the United Kingdom and Ireland on July 17, 2020.[9]
What the cited sources add
Adrian Marcano of Inverse described the 2011 series as one of the greatest anime ever, highlighting the Chimera Ant arc as one of the best story arcs in anime history.[2][3] Marcano stated that the villain Meruem, not the hero, elevates the anime to instant classic status.[2] He noted that the series ties themes of humanity, power, and connections together with a story about following dreams.[2] Nick Creamer praised the show's fantastic aesthetics in direction, sound design, pacing, and animation.[3]
Marcano also reported that the original creator, Yoshiro Tagashi, is ill and that a new writer might be brought in for the series.[2]
