Making and release
Intelligent Systems developed Paper Mario, with Shigeru Miyamoto serving as producer.[3] Nintendo first approached Square to develop the game, but Square declined due to work on Final Fantasy VII.[3] The game was initially called Super Mario RPG 2 and was slated for the 64DD before moving to cartridge format.[3] Producer Hiroyasu Sasano stated the paper-like style came from the belief players might be tired of computer-generated 3D graphics.[4]
A $4 million sum was allocated for marketing the game.[5] Enterbrain, with distribution by Famitsu magazine, put out the soundtrack in Japan on September 21, 2000.[6] Yuka Tsujiyoko composed all the game's music, while Koji Kondo contributed a reworked arrangement of themes from earlier Super Mario titles.[7]
What the cited sources add
DeMario described the battle system as requiring calculation of damage equal to power minus enemy defense.[2] DeMario reported that the game rarely took advantage of its paper effects, being mostly sprites in a 3D polygonal world.[2] DeMario stated the game contains huge heaps of mini-games and more side quests than the original Mario RPG.[2] The soundtrack album includes 78 tracks on two discs.[7]
