Gameplay

Mario Party Superstars is a party game where four players, either human or computer-controlled, compete on one of five boards. The goal is to collect the most stars, which are usually bought from Toadette for twenty coins, though other ways to get them exist. Each turn, players roll a die to move one to ten spaces, and items can be used to help or hinder others. After every round of moves, a random minigame from a set of 100 is played, with 55 of those coming from the Nintendo 64 trilogy. The "Mt. Minigames" mode lets players enjoy minigames without the board game. All characters from the first four Mario Party games are available, plus Birdo and Rosalina.

Release

Nintendo first showed off Mario Party Superstars during its E3 2021 Nintendo Direct on June 15. That presentation featured remade versions of Peach's Birthday Cake from the original Mario Party and Space Land from Mario Party 2. Polygon's Ryan Gilliam pointed out that these boards included new events not found in the originals, and that the game reused some assets, like the user interface, from Super Mario Party. The Direct also confirmed that Birdo would be playable for the first time since Mario Party 9 in 2012. The third board, Woody Woods from Mario Party 3, was later announced on the game's website. On September 23, another Nintendo Direct revealed the final two boards: Yoshi's Tropical Island from the first Mario Party and Horror Land from Mario Party 2. Some minigames from the original game that require fast analog stick rotation return, and they include a warning not to spin the stick with the palm of your hand, a precaution stemming from past hand injuries.

Reception

Mario Party Superstars received "generally favorable" reviews on Metacritic. OpenCritic reported that 76% of critics recommended the game. IGN's Mitchell Saltzman rated it "great," calling it the best Mario Party in a long time. In its first week in Japan, the game sold 163,256 physical copies, becoming the week's bestselling retail game. As of March 31, 2025, worldwide sales reached 14 million copies, making it the 18th best-selling game for the Nintendo Switch.
