Birdo
A pink dino with a snout full of surprises, ready to shell out victory.
Birdo is a pink, anthropomorphic dinosaur-like creature known for her red hairbow and ability to fire eggs as projectiles. First appearing as a boss in Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic (1987), which was localized for English audiences as Super Mario Bros. 2 (1988), she has since become a recurring figure in the Mario franchise. While her debut role was that of an obstacle, Birdo transitioned into a playable character across various sports and racing titles. Her history includes complex discussions regarding gender identity, stemming from early manual descriptions that stated she thought of herself as female and preferred to be called 'Birdetta'.

Lore & Background
Birdo's origins trace back to the Family Computer Disk System game Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic (1987), where she served as a boss opponent. In the North American localization, Super Mario Bros. 2 (1988), her name was mistakenly switched with another enemy, Ostro, in the credits and manual. The first edition English manual described Birdo as thinking he is a girl and preferring the name 'Birdetta', leading to her interpretation as one of the earliest transgender characters in video games. Later printings omitted the mention of her being male, and subsequent games have varied in how they address her gender, sometimes referring to her with male pronouns or treating her as female. In Captain Rainbow (2008), Birdo appears on Mimin Island, imprisoned for using the women's bathroom, requiring a quest involving a vibrator to prove she is a woman; this remains the last video game mention of her specific gender history.
Reader's Guide
Birdo made her playable racing debut in various Mario sports titles, including Mario Tennis (2000) and Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour (2003). She returned to competitive play in later entries such as Mario Tennis Aces (2018) and Mario Strikers: Battle League (2022), as well as multiple installments of the Mario Kart series. Her signature ability remains firing eggs from her mouth, a mechanic carried over from her boss appearances where she used them as projectiles. While early manuals noted her preference for the name 'Birdetta', most modern media continues to use 'Birdo'. Her character design has remained consistent as a pink dinosaur-like creature with a red hairbow, though her gender presentation has fluctuated across different media and voice acting performances.
