Marine Fish Genera Codexery

Trichonotus

Sister group to gobies, sole genus of Trichonotidae.

Last updated

Trichonotus is a genus of marine fish in the order Gobiiformes. It is the only genus in the family Trichonotidae and the suborder Trichonotoidei. These fish are the closest relatives of the gobies (Gobioidei). They are found across the Indo-West Pacific region.

Members of this genus have a lower jaw that protrudes outward. They possess five soft rays and a single spine on each pelvic fin.

In males, the front rays of the dorsal fin may be elongated. The lateral line runs along the middle of the body, and the scales along this line have a deep, V-shaped notch at the rear edge. The type species is Trichonotus setiger.

The genus contains ten recognized species: Trichonotus arabicus (Arabian sand-diver), Trichonotus blochii (Bloch's sand-diver), Trichonotus cyclograptus (Bengal sand-diver), Trichonotus elegans (Long-rayed sand-diver), Trichonotus filamentosus, Trichonotus halstead (Gold-bar sand-diver), Trichonotus marleyi, Trichonotus nikii, Trichonotus setiger (Spotted sand-diver), and Trichonotus somaliensis (Somalian sand-diver).

Lore & Background

Trichonotus species are characterized by jutting lower jaws, five soft rays, and single pelvic spines. In males, the anterior rays on their dorsal fins may be extended.

Their lateral lines run along the middle flank, and on the back end of the lateral line scales is a deep, V-shaped notch. The type species is Trichonotus setiger. The genus includes ten recognized species, many with common names such as Arabian sand-diver, Bloch's sand-diver, Bengal sand-diver, Long-rayed sand-diver, Gold-bar sand-diver, Spotted sand-diver, and Somalian sand-diver.

Reader's Guide

Trichonotus holds a unique position in marine fish classification as the only genus in its family and suborder, and as the sister group to the gobies (Gobioidei). This phylogenetic placement underscores its evolutionary significance, bridging morphological and ecological traits between basal gobiiforms and the highly diverse gobies. The genus is distributed across the Indo-West Pacific, and its species are commonly known as sand-divers, reflecting their benthic, burrowing habits.

The distinctive features—jutting lower jaws, extended dorsal rays in males, and V-notched lateral line scales—are key diagnostic characters. The ten recognized species, described by various ichthyologists from the 19th to 21st centuries, demonstrate ongoing taxonomic interest. Trichonotus remains a focal group for understanding gobiiform evolution and biogeography.
