Development and release
The project was produced by former employees of Tengen, which became part of Time Warner Interactive in mid-1994. Jun Amanai directed the game; he had previously designed PC releases for SoftBank, the arcade game World Stadium for Namco, and worked on the Game Gear title Popils, the TurboGrafx-16 port of Klax, and the Japanese Mega Drive port of Marble Madness. Co-planner Mizuho Yoshioka stated that the original director left during development, after which he rallied the remaining staff to complete the game. Tama launched with the Sega Saturn on November 22, 1994 and with the PlayStation on December 3, 1994 in Japan.
Reception
Tama received consistently average reviews from Japanese magazines and foreign publications that imported the game. Next Generation rated the Saturn edition two stars out of five, commenting that it was unlikely to be a major title in the Saturn's US lineup. The same magazine rated the PlayStation edition three stars out of five, noting that while the Saturn handled the game well, its power would be better used elsewhere.
