The club's history includes unofficial teams from the 1970s, a partnership and disbandment in 2005, and a revival in 2018. The current team was founded on 28 May 2018 and won the FA Women's Championship in 2018–19. They reached the 2023 Women's FA Cup final, losing 1–0 to Chelsea, and won the 2023–24 Women's FA Cup by defeating Tottenham Hotspur 4–0 on 12 May 2024.

The team plays its home matches at Leigh Sports Village. They have also played at Old Trafford, with the first game there in March 2021 against West Ham United. For the 2024–25 season, the club will play three games at Old Trafford.
