Background
Erikson and Ian C. Esslemont first built the Malazan world as a setting for a tabletop role-playing game, then wrote a film script called Gardens of the Moon that nobody bought; Erikson reworked it into a novel, finished around 1991-92. After years of rejections Transworld took it and asked for more, later offering 675,000 pounds for the other nine books. The story opens in the Empire's 96th year, with a twelve-year-old Ganoes Paran watching the attack on Malaz City's Mouse Quarter. Years later, under Empress Laseen, High Fist Dujek's army finally takes the Free City of Pale once Anomander Rake pulls his floating fortress, Moon's Spawn, out of the fight.
