Eldrazi
Horrors from beyond reality that devour magic and leave only silence in their wake.
The Eldrazi are colossal, colorless entities from outside the Multiverse that consume magic and reality itself. Unlike typical creatures, they are not native to any plane but exist as abstract horrors that view existence merely as food. Their presence on a world triggers an existential crisis, draining planes of their mana and leaving behind barren wastelands known as 'dead zones.'
These beings were imprisoned by the ancient god Emrakul's rivals using intricate leylines and powerful artifacts to contain them within specific planes like Zendikar. When these seals eventually weakened or were broken, the Eldrazi awoke, forcing Planeswalkers to unite in desperate defense efforts. They represent the ultimate threat of entropy, stripping away the vibrant colors of magic until only silence remains.

Lore & Background
Originating from the void between planes, the Eldrazi are not biological organisms but rather living concepts of consumption. The three titans—Emrakul, Ulamog, and Kozilek—each represent a different aspect of this hunger. They do not speak or negotiate; they simply arrive and begin to eat. Their touch corrupts the very fabric of a plane, turning vibrant ecosystems into gray, lifeless husks where mana cannot flow.
On Zendikar, these entities were bound thousands of years ago by the Elspeth Tirel's ancestors and other powerful beings using complex leylines that acted as a prison. The planeswalkers who sealed them away knew they could not be destroyed, only contained. However, time eroded the seals, and when the Eldrazi eventually broke free, they unleashed chaos across the plane, forcing the inhabitants to evolve into the 'Eldrazi Spawn' or flee entirely. Their existence challenges the fundamental laws of the Multiverse.
Reader's Guide
The Eldrazi operate outside the traditional color wheel, representing a force of pure entropy that negates all colors. Mechanically, they are often depicted as massive creatures with abilities that disrupt opponents' strategies, such as forcing sacrifices or preventing card draws. Philosophically, they embody the fear of nothingness and the end of creation. Their history is defined by their imprisonment on Zendikar, where they were bound by leylines until their eventual release triggered a multiversal crisis.
Famous users include Jace Beleren, who used his mind-magic to temporarily hold them back, and Nissa Revane, who helped restore the plane's life. In gameplay and lore, they serve as the ultimate 'final boss' archetype for many storylines. Their defeat often requires the combined effort of multiple Planeswalkers or the sacrifice of entire worlds. They are not evil in a moral sense but are simply forces of nature that consume everything.
