Madonna and contemporary arts
American artist whose art-world influence was made largely behind the scenes.
Madonna (born 1958) is an American artist whose contributions to underground and contemporary arts have been documented by art publications, scholars, and critics. Though lesser-known than her other roles, her impact in the art world has been described as made almost entirely behind the scenes. She has been called a continuous multi-media art project, condensing fashion, dance, photography, sculpture, cinema, music, video, and painting into her own artwork.

Lore & Background
Madonna's interest in the arts began in childhood, visiting the Detroit Institute of Arts and being influenced by Catholic church art. She moved to New York City to pursue modern dance, befriending and dating plastic artists including Andy Warhol, Martin Burgoyne, Keith Haring, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Her graffiti tag was 'Boy Toy', later used professionally. She has been an art collector, included among Art & Antiques' 100 Biggest Collectors, and an art supporter who has used art for charity. In 2001, she lent Frida Kahlo's Self-Portrait with Monkey to the Tate Modern. She sponsored exhibitions of Basquiat, Cindy Sherman, and Tina Modotti, co-initiated 'Art for Freedom' in 2012, ran the installation X-STaTIC Pro=CeSS (2003), and created the NFT 'Mother of Creation' with Mike Winkelmann in 2022.
Reader's Guide
Madonna's significance in contemporary arts lies in her role as a collector, supporter, and multi-media artist whose work has attracted both celebratory and derogatory commentary. Late-twentieth-century views placed her amid low and high culture, with some labeling her a modernist. By the next century, critics long resisted using 'Madonna' and 'artistic' in the same sentence, while supporters like art historian Kyra Belán saw her as a symbol for female achievement. She has been referred to as a contemporary gesamtkunstwerk and the art-pop queen. David Blaine suggested she is herself her greatest work of art. Her influence appears in contemporary artists including Silvia Prada, Trisha Baga, and Pegasus. Various artists have depicted her, including Peter Howson, Andrew Logan, Sebastian Krüger, and Al Hirschfeld. Her likeness and works have been displayed in museums and galleries worldwide; the video for 'Bedtime Story' is part of the Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection.
