Background

In April 2015, director Rob Letterman told Collider's Steven Weintraub that Danny Elfman would write the music for Goosebumps, taking over from Henry Jackman, who scored Letterman's Monsters vs. Aliens and Gulliver's Travels. Jack Black said Elfman was always their first pick because they wanted a composer who could deliver both funny and scary sounds. The score was cut in late May and early June 2015.

Reception

Filmtracks wrote that the whole will please enthusiasts of vintage Elfman zaniness, especially in its nicely divided album presentation. James Southall of Movie Wave stated it is classic, vintage Danny Elfman music, so much fun and that all fans of his earlier Tim Burton scores will love it. Sean Wilson of MFiles wrote that Elfman's offbeat sense of humour and his ability to translate that humour into musical form is put to excellent use in the Goosebumps score, one that fits the movie like a glove while functioning as a solid, stand-alone listen. The Hollywood Reporter described Danny Elfman's big playful Hitchcockian score as providing a unifying undercurrent for the blend of CGI and old school fx make-up and puppetry. Jordan Hoffman of The Guardian wrote that Danny Elfman's score keeps the proceedings moving along and described the film as Tim Burton-lite. John Wirt of The Advocate described the score as wall-to-wall, while Brandy McDonnell of The Oklahoman called it playfully ominous. Sandy Schaefer of Screen Rant wrote that the kooky score by Danny Elfman works best at infusing the film with a playful spirit.
