Rodney Alan 'The Sheriff' Buford, born November 2, 1977, is an American former professional basketball player. He played college ball for the Creighton Bluejays and was picked by the Miami Heat in the second round (53rd overall) of the 1999 NBA draft. Buford saw limited time as a rookie with the Heat, then moved to Italy with Basket Rimini before joining the Philadelphia 76ers in December for the 2000–01 season.
He later suited up for the Memphis Grizzlies, Sacramento Kings, and New Jersey Nets, averaging 6.4 points per game over his NBA career. Overseas, he played for Panathinaikos BC during the 2002–03 season and started the 2006–07 Euroleague campaign with Maccabi Tel Aviv. He was released by Maccabi in December 2006 due to discipline violations and poor form, and it was later discovered he had failed a drug test there—his third violation in his career.
Background
Buford's stint with Maccabi Tel Aviv began with the 2006–07 Euroleague season, but it ended abruptly. In December 2006, the club released him because of discipline violations and poor form. After a few months, news broke that he had failed a drug test during his time with Maccabi, marking his third career violation.
That positive test was for cannabis, which occurred before a Euroleague game while he was still with the Israeli club. FIBA subsequently banned him, and he left Maccabi after playing just one game in February 2007. The fallout followed him: he later played for Ukrainian team Azovmash Mariupol, a squad he had also played for in the 2005–06 season, but left after that single game.
