Southern Forestry Conclave
Annual forestry student competition with physical and technical events.
Every year, over 250 students from 15 forestry schools across the South gather for the Southern Forestry Conclave, a competition blending physical and technical challenges. Physical events include archery, axe throwing, pole climbing, log rolling, bow sawing, log birling, and cross-cut sawing. Technical events cover dendrology, timber volume estimation, photogrammetry, and wood identification. Individual event scores are combined to crown an overall winning school, a prestigious honor. Hosted on a rotating basis by participating schools, the Conclave is sponsored by the Association of Southern Forestry Clubs. It fosters spirited competition and helps students build professionalism and high standards, requiring significant cooperation among the clubs to succeed.

Background
The first Conclave was held in 1958, sponsored by the University of Georgia, with eight forestry schools participating. Fewer than 100 students competed in that first event, which featured mainly physical events. Over 50 Conclaves have been conducted since then. The Conclave promotes spirited competition among forestry students representing their respective schools and clubs, and participation helps students develop high standards and professionalism. Planning the Conclave requires considerable cooperation among the participating forestry clubs for it to be successful. The event was postponed in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, with the schedule resuming in 2022 at the University of Tennessee.
