Early life
Keith Urban came into the world on October 26, 1967, in Whangārei, New Zealand, as the youngest child of Marienne and Robert Urban. When he was two, his family relocated to Caboolture, Queensland, Australia. His musical instincts emerged early: he received a ukulele at age four and started playing guitar at six. His parents were country music fans, and his father, who ran a convenience store, posted a notice in the shop window for a guitar teacher, which led to lessons with Sue McCarthy.
Urban took part in local contests and performed with a community theatre group. He credits guitarists Mark Knopfler and Lindsey Buckingham as key influences. In 1980, he competed on the Australian TV show New Faces. Later, he appeared on programs like Reg Lindsay Country Homestead, often singing duets with Jenny Wilson as the duo Silver Spirit, and they won a Golden Guitar at the Tamworth Country Music Festival.
He was active in the Northern Suburbs Country Music Club and played in the band Kids Country. In 1990, Urban won the Star Maker competition at the Tamworth festival, earning a recording deal with EMI Music Australia.
Musical career
In November 1989, Urban self-released a promotional extended play titled Looking for a deal !! to seek a record deal. After signing with EMI in Australia, he released his self-titled debut album in 1990. He appeared on the compilation Breaking Ground – New Directions in Country Music, nominated for the 1991 ARIA Award for Best Country Album. He toured as a backup act to Slim Dusty between 1993 and 1994, and they recorded a duet of Dusty's "Lights on the Hill".
Urban made his first Grand Ole Opry appearance backing Dusty. He sang backing vocals on INXS's 1991 single "Shining Star". Moving to Nashville in 1992, he appeared in Alan Jackson's "Mercury Blues" music video. He co-wrote songs for Toby Keith, 4 Runner, and the Raybon Brothers.
In 1995, he formed The Ranch, which released a self-titled album in 1997 and charted two singles on the US Hot Country Songs chart. He also played guitar on albums by Garth Brooks, Paul Jefferson, Tim Wilson, and Charlie Daniels.
Television and film appearances
On 23 November 2011, Urban was confirmed as a vocal coach on the Australian version of The Voice alongside Seal, Joel Madden, and Delta Goodrem. He did not return for season two and was replaced by Ricky Martin. He returned for the tenth season in 2020, replacing Boy George, alongside Jessica Mauboy, Guy Sebastian, and Rita Ora. He coached on the eleventh season in 2022 and on the spin-off The Voice Generations, but did not return for the twelfth season in 2023 due to his tour, replaced by Jason Derulo.
On 16 September 2012, Fox announced Urban would replace Steven Tyler as a judge on American Idol season 12 with Randy Jackson, Mariah Carey, and Nicki Minaj. He returned for seasons 13 and 14, and judged the 15th season in 2016, but announced his retirement from the show in August 2017. Urban appears in the 2020 Australian documentary Slim and I, discussing the influence of Slim Dusty and Joy McKean, and performs a cover of "Lights on the Hill".
Personal life
Keith Urban is a dual citizen of Australia and the United States. He first met actress Nicole Kidman in January 2005 at a Hollywood event promoting Australia, and they started dating about six months later. The couple married on June 25, 2006, in a chapel on the grounds of St. Patrick's Estate in Manly, Sydney. In early 2007, Urban sued an American painter who shared his name over the website KeithUrban.com; the painter countersued, and the case was settled in the painter's favor.
Their first daughter was born in Nashville in 2008, and their second daughter arrived via gestational surrogacy at a Nashville hospital on December 28, 2010. Urban released the song "The Fighter" in 2016, reportedly inspired by Kidman. In February 2025, their Beverly Hills home was burglarized while the family was away. The couple separated in September 2025, with Kidman filing for divorce, which was finalized in January 2026 under a parenting plan with both parties waiving spousal and child support.
Urban has long supported St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. He has been open about past struggles with alcoholism and cocaine addiction, entering a Nashville treatment center in 1998. On October 19, 2006, he entered another rehab program in Rancho Mirage, California, issuing a statement expressing regret for the hurt caused. He completed rehab on January 18, 2007, and announced plans to tour in support of his album Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy Thing.
