It became MGM's most successful film of 1950 and the second highest-grossing film in the United States that year.[1]

Making and release

MGM purchased the film rights from Gaumont British in November 1946.[2] MGM elected to film on location in Africa after the postponement of Quo Vadis.[3] The official reason was Bennett's illness, but rumors cited disagreements with the cast.[4] In October 1948, Helen Deutsch was given scriptwriting duties, and Sam Zimbalist was appointed as the film's producer.[2]

A fleet of Dodge trucks transported the production gear, covering more than 70,000 miles in total.[3] Stewart Granger was contracted for the lead role in August 1949, with Richard Carlson joining the cast the following month.[5] Andrew Marton took over directing duties from Compton Bennett in February 1950, following five months of location work.[4]

What the cited sources add

At the British box office in 1951, the film ranked as the third most popular.[6][7] In France, the movie was a major success, drawing 4,108,770 admissions.[6] Kerr and Granger reprised their film roles for that sixty-minute radio adaptation.[8]
