Eko and Locke discover a hidden hatch beneath a question mark.
Last updated
"?" is the 46th episode of Lost and the 21st episode of the second season. It first aired on May 10, 2006, on ABC. The episode features Mr. Eko in its flashbacks.
Plot
Eko, a priest in Australia, receives a counterfeit passport from an associate before being sent to investigate a miracle: a drowned young girl named Charlotte who came back to life on an autopsy table. Initially the miracle appears genuine. Eko consults the girl's father, Richard Malkin, the psychic Claire visited in "Raised by Another". Malkin claims Charlotte survived naturally, possibly due to the mammalian diving reflex, and that Charlotte and her mother are pretending a miracle occurred because they resent Malkin being a fraudulent psychic.
Eko reports that no miracle took place. In the final flashback, as Eko boards Flight 815, Charlotte confronts him at the airport, telling him she saw Yemi while between worlds and that his brother is proud of him. Angered, Eko yells at Charlotte, but Libby interrupts to ask if everything is all right. Charlotte tells Eko he will see Yemi again.
On the Island
In a dream, Eko chops wood on the beach and has visions of Ana Lucia and Yemi, who say he must help John, who has "lost his way", by having John take him "to the question mark". Michael, having freed Henry after shooting Ana-Lucia, Libby, and his own arm, stumbles out of the hatch claiming he was shot in the arm by an unknown person. Sawyer, Kate, and Jack discover Ana-Lucia dead and Libby near death. Michael fears Libby will reveal the truth; Jack asks Sawyer for heroin to make Libby comfortable and asks Kate to go with him, giving Sawyer the choice of disclosing the guns' location or letting Libby die painfully.
Sawyer agrees, and the guns are found in a secret compartment in his tent. Eko offers to track Henry Gale with Locke's help, but after leaving reveals his real goal is to force Locke to take him to the question mark, where they find the burnt plane containing Yemi.
They camp there, and Locke dreams of Yemi on a nearby cliff. Eko climbs the cliff and sees a giant question mark etched in the grass beside the plane. He climbs down, and with Locke pushes the plane aside to reveal a hidden hatch underneath.
Production
In this episode, Libby, who was believed to have died in the prior installment, is confirmed dead, making her the fourth main character killed off in the series after Boone, Shannon, and Ana Lucia. Cynthia Watros continued to be listed as a series regular through the rest of the season. Darren Aronofsky had been set to direct but stepped away when his partner Rachel Weisz became pregnant, with Deran Sarafian taking over. The writers, Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, described the episode as a chance to finally bring Locke and Mr. Eko together for a philosophical clash of faith and will that had been building all season.
