Göbekli Tepe, whose Kurdish name translates to 'Wish Hill', is a Neolithic tell—an artificial mound—located in the Taş Tepeler region of Şanlıurfa Province, Turkey, within the foothills of the Taurus Mountains. The site overlooks the Harran plain and the headwaters of the Balikh River, a Euphrates tributary. Built on a flat limestone plateau, the tell rises 15 meters high and covers 8 hectares, with steep slopes and cliffs on most sides. During its occupation, the climate was wetter than today, and the surrounding landscape was an open steppe grassland abundant with wild cereals like einkorn, wheat, and barley, as well as grazing animals such as wild sheep, goat, gazelle, and equids. Large herds of goitered gazelle may have migrated past seasonally. The builders used soft limestone bedrock for construction and flint for tools, while drinking water was supplied by a rainwater harvesting system of carved channels feeding several bedrock cisterns, capable of holding at least 150 cubic meters. The site was first used at the dawn of the Southwest Asian Neolithic, a period marking the earliest permanent human settlements. Unlike many contemporary sites, Göbekli Tepe was built on a rocky mountaintop with no clear evidence of agricultural fields, making it central to debates about whether farming drove settlement or vice versa. Recent findings, however, reveal domestic structures, extensive cereal processing, and daily-life tools, suggesting a permanent settlement rather than a purely ritual sanctuary used by nomads. The large circular megalithic structures, often called the world's first temples, were likely roofed and regularly collapsed or were buried by landslides, only to be repaired or rebuilt. Their architecture and animal reliefs resemble those at nearby sites like Karahan Tepe. First noted in a 1963 survey, the site’s significance was recognized in 1994 by German archaeologist Klaus Schmidt, who began excavations in 1995. After his death in 2014, work continued under Turkish prehistorian Necmi Karul, jointly led by Istanbul University, Şanlıurfa Museum, and the German Archaeological Institute. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018, only about 10% of the mound has been excavated, with geophysical surveys indicating at least 20 large enclosures remain buried.
