Johnson won a national championship with Michigan State in 1979, was selected first overall in the 1979 NBA draft by the Lakers, and led the team to five NBA championships. He retired abruptly in 1991 after announcing he had contracted HIV, returned for the 1992 All-Star Game (winning MVP), retired again after player protests, then returned in 1996 at age 36 for 32 games before retiring for the third time. He holds NBA records for regular-season assists per game (11.19) and playoff assists per game (12.35), plus playoff records for career assists and triple-doubles.

He was co-captain of the 1992 Olympic Dream Team, winning gold. He is one of eight players to achieve the basketball Triple Crown. He was a former part-owner of the Lakers and team president of basketball operations in the late 2010s. He has won 16 championships: one in college, five as an NBA player, and ten as an owner. In 2025, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
