Personal life

Martin Jones grew up in North Vancouver, British Columbia, with his brother Jordan and sister Jocelyn. His father Harvey, the Vancouver Canucks' Vice-President of Arena Operations, gave him advantages in hockey that most kids lacked, Jones acknowledged. He played in the 2003 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament for a North Vancouver minor team. Jones attended Handsworth Secondary School and played at the North Shore Winter Club.

Playing career

Jones was selected by the Calgary Hitmen in the fourth round of the 2005 WHL bantam draft and joined the team in 2006–07 as a backup. He went undrafted in 2008 but impressed the Los Angeles Kings at rookie camp, signing a three-year contract before returning to the Hitmen. As Calgary's starter in 2008–09, his 45 wins broke the team record; he led the league in wins, tied for the lead in shutouts (7), and finished third in goals against average (2.08).

The Hitmen won 12 consecutive playoff games before losing the WHL championship series. He was named a Second Team All-Star. In 2009–10, Jones led the league with a 2.21 GAA, was a First Team All-Star, and won the Del Wilson Trophy as the WHL's top goaltender. He set team records for career wins and shutouts (16).

Assigned to the Manchester Monarchs in 2010–11, he posted a 16–3–0 record with a .939 save percentage and 1.93 GAA in his first 22 games, earning a spot in the 2011 AHL All-Star Game. Jones was on the Kings' roster as a spare when they won their first Stanley Cup but did not play.
