Last updated

Tyler Toffoli (born April 24, 1992) is a Canadian professional ice hockey forward who won the Stanley Cup with the Los Angeles Kings in 2014. He was selected by the Kings in the second round, 47th overall, of the 2010 NHL entry draft and played for the team until February 2020, when he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks.

Lore & Background

Toffoli made his NHL debut on March 16, 2013, in a 5–2 win over the San Jose Sharks, and scored his first NHL goal two days later against goaltender Mike Smith of the Phoenix Coyotes. During the 2012–13 season, he won the AHL's Dudley 'Red' Garrett Memorial Award as rookie of the year after recording 28 goals and 20 assists in 55 games with the Manchester Monarchs. In the 2014 playoffs, he assisted on Alec Martinez's Stanley Cup-winning goal in double overtime of Game 5.

Toffoli was a key member of the 'That 70s Line' alongside Jeff Carter and Tanner Pearson during the 2014–15 season. He scored his first career NHL hat-trick on February 12, 2015, against the Calgary Flames. On February 15, 2020, he became the first player in league history to record a hat-trick in an outdoor game, doing so in the 2020 NHL Stadium Series against the Colorado Avalanche. Two days later, he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks.

Reader's Guide

Tyler Toffoli's tenure with the Los Angeles Kings is defined by his contributions to the team's 2014 Stanley Cup championship, including a primary assist on the Cup-winning goal. He developed within the Kings' system after being drafted in 2010, winning AHL rookie of the year before establishing himself as a reliable NHL scorer.

His time with the Kings saw him form the productive 'That 70s Line' and achieve a unique milestone as the first player to score a hat-trick in an outdoor NHL game. Toffoli's trade from the Kings in February 2020 ended a seven-year association with the organization that drafted and developed him. He later played for the Vancouver Canucks, Montreal Canadiens, Calgary Flames, New Jersey Devils, and Winnipeg Jets, and as of his most recent season, he served as alternate captain for the San Jose Sharks.
