William Ellis Russell (born October 21, 1948) spent his entire 18-year Major League career with the Los Angeles Dodgers, accumulating 2,181 games as a player. Drafted in the ninth round of the 1966 MLB draft out of Pittsburg High School in Kansas, he debuted in 1969 at age 20. While he began as an outfielder, he settled into his definitive role as the starting shortstop in 1972, anchoring a famous infield alongside Ron Cey, Davey Lopes, and Steve Garvey for over eight years. Russell batted .263 during the regular season and matched that average in 23 World Series games across four appearances, with a standout .423 performance in the 1978 Fall Classic against the Yankees.
