Background

The club started in 1946 as the Detroit Gems of the National Basketball League, winning just 4 of 44 games before being sold for $15,000 and moved to Minneapolis. Renamed the Lakers after Minnesota's Land of 10,000 Lakes nickname, they grabbed George Mikan and won the 1948 NBL title and the 1949 BAA title, then four of the next five NBA crowns. After money troubles they relocated to Los Angeles before the 1960–61 season. The 1960s brought six Finals losses to the Celtics, but Wilt Chamberlain helped deliver the 1972 title. Jerry Buss bought the team in 1979, the same year Magic Johnson arrived, launching a decade of dominance in the 1980s.
