Alex Westlund

American goaltender and former Detroit Red Wings goalie coach.

Alex Westlund, a retired American professional ice hockey goaltender, now coaches. He was the Detroit Red Wings’ goalie coach. Born December 28, 1975, he played for Team USA’s bronze-winning 2004 World Championship squad.

Playing career

Westlund grew up in Chatham, New Jersey, and began playing prep hockey at Chatham High School as a freshman goaltender. He later attended the Lawrenceville School, and in 2010 he was inducted into the New Jersey High School Ice Hockey Hall of Fame. At Yale University from 1995 to 1999, he earned All-America Second Team honors and received the William Neely Mallory Award, which recognizes the senior man who best represents the highest ideals of American sportsmanship and Yale tradition. He also won the Ken Dryden Award as the ECAC’s top goalie of the year. Westlund left Yale holding school records for wins, saves, and games played. His professional career began in the 1999–2000 season with the Dayton Bombers of the East Coast Hockey League, and he later played in the IHL, ECHL, AHL, and in Russia, Slovenia, Austria, Slovakia, Germany, Croatia, and China. He was the third goaltender for Team USA at the 2004 IIHF World Championship, where the team won a bronze medal, though he did not see any ice time.
