Morphology (linguistics)
Study of word structure and formation in language.
Morphology looks at how languages build words and how those words connect to each other. It works at a scale between phonology (the study of distinct speech sounds) and syntax (the study of phrases and sentences). The core units are morphemes—the smallest pieces that carry meaning or a grammatical job. Some morphemes, like roots, can stand alone as words; others, like affixes, only appear attached to a larger word. For example, *catch* is a root morpheme, and *‑ing* is a suffix morpheme; together they form *catching*. Morphology also examines how words act as parts of speech, how they get inflected for categories like number, tense, or aspect, and how speakers productively create new words in specific contexts. These processes shift over a language’s history.
The term “morphology” was first used in linguistics by August Schleicher in 1859. But the study is much older. Ancient Indian linguist Pāṇini laid out 3,959 rules for Sanskrit morphology in the *Aṣṭādhyāyī* using a constituency grammar. The Greco-Roman tradition also analyzed word forms, and Arabic morphological studies, such as Aḥmad b. 'Alī Mas'ūd’s *Marāḥ Al-Arwāḥ*, go back to at least 1200 CE.
Because “word” is a fuzzy term, linguists often use two clearer concepts: lexeme and word-form. A lexeme is a set of inflected word-forms, usually shown by the citation form in small capitals. The lexeme **eat** includes *eat*, *eats*, *eaten*, and *ate*. *Eat* and *eats* are different word-forms of the same lexeme, while *eat* and *eater* are separate lexemes because they represent different concepts.
A single phonological word doesn’t always match a single morphological word. In Latin, the suffix *‑que* (meaning “and”) attaches to the second noun phrase, so “apples and oranges” becomes “apples oranges-and.” In Kwak’wala, semantic affixes attach phonologically to the preceding lexeme rather than to the one they semantically modify. For instance, markers for case and possession attach to the verb or to a noun that isn’t the one they refer to. This mismatch between prosodic-phonological and grammatical definitions of “word” is widespread, appearing in Amazonian, Australian Aboriginal, Caucasian, Eskimo, Indo-European, Native North American, West African, and sign languages. Many languages use clitics—units that act grammatically like independent words but prosodically like bound morphemes—which challenge linguistic theory.
Morphological rules fall into two types: inflectional rules, which produce different forms of the same lexeme (like *dog* → *dogs*), and word-formation rules, which create new lexemes (like *dog catcher* or *dishwasher*). The boundary between them isn’t sharp, and linguists often disagree on whether a given rule is inflection or word formation. Word formation can combine two complete words, while inflection typically attaches a suffix to a verb to match the subject, as in “I go” versus “he goes.” Morphological typology is a separate field that classifies languages by their morphological features.
