Recording and production
In 2016, while Lil Wayne was in a legal battle with Cash Money Records over contractual disputes, his next album was announced as Funeral. The album was completed in 2019, and Wayne began promoting it again. He discussed how his recording process changed over his career in a Vibe interview. The track "Bing James" ends with 24 seconds of silence as a tribute to Kobe Bryant's death. The standard edition has 24 tracks and the deluxe edition has 8 tracks, honoring Bryant's jersey numbers with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Marketing and sales
Lil Wayne described the title Funeral as a continuation of his 2010 album Rebirth. The cover features calligraphic text that forms a rotational ambigram, reading "Funeral" right side up and "Lil Wayne" upside down. On January 23, 2020, he revealed the release date and artwork, also teasing a snippet of the title track. Funeral debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 for the week of February 15, 2020, with 139,000 album-equivalent units, including 38,000 pure album sales.
Critical reception
Funeral received a mixed to positive response from critics. On Metacritic, it scored 62 out of 100 based on 10 reviews, while AnyDecentMusic? gave it 5.9 out of 10. Robert Christgau noted that the album was downplayed by most outlets that reviewed it, with only Rolling Stone delivering a negative review. Christopher Thiessen of Consequence of Sound wrote that Funeral plays like a mixtape rather than an album, praising Wayne's punchlines and flow but criticizing his lack of editing, making the album exhausting by its midpoint. Jacob Carey of Exclaim! also criticized the length, stating it lacks replay value compared to Wayne's earlier work. NME's Thomas Hobbs felt the songs lack unity and interpreted the large number of tracks as an attempt to exploit streaming politics, noting that earlier ambitious material gave way to formulaic songwriting. Danny Schwartz of Rolling Stone called Funeral wildly uneven, with pronounced highs and lows, peaking early on "Mahogany". He labeled "Trust Nobody" the worst song due to an out-of-place Adam Levine hook, and criticized "Get Out Of My Head" for featuring XXXTentacion, while finding "Sights and Silencers" a limp ballad. He applauded "Bastard (Satan's Kid)" for its parental neglect theme but ultimately found the album emotionally adrift.

The standard edition contains 24 tracks, with the deluxe edition adding 8 tracks. "Dreams" features additional vocals by Ben Burgess. "Get Outta My Head" samples "The Boy With The Black Eyes" by XXXTentacion. "Mahogany" contains samples from "Bass Song" by Eryn Kane. "Clap for Em" samples "Drag Rap (Triggerman)" by The Showboys. "Harden" samples "Love Me or Leave Me" by Band of Thieves, cleared through Tracklib.
