Fotbal Club Caracal was a Romanian professional football club from Caracal, Olt County. Its best period came in the early 1990s, when the club—then called Electroputere Craiova—played four consecutive seasons in the Romanian first league. The highest finish was 3rd place in the 1991–92 season, which earned qualification for the UEFA Cup.
History
The story of this club begins in the early 1950s, when Craiova’s rapid industrial growth gave rise to a new football team tied to the Electroputere factory. Founded in 1949 as Metalul Craiova, the side was built around plant workers. While their early regional championship results were nothing special, the team soon became known for an energetic style and a loyal following. Key players back then included Marin Năstase, Rici Smarandache, Constantin Monțescu, Dumitru Grigorescu, Nicolae Razga, Vasile Constantin, and Dumitru Hecher.
The 1950 season showed their inconsistency: they lost three in a row, then won four straight, ending up 5th. After a name change to Metalul Electroputere, results wavered. A poor 1956 campaign led to relegation to the city league and another rebranding as Energia Electroputere. Coach Lambru Dunăreanu sparked a turnaround.
Following a 3rd-place finish in 1958–59, the team claimed the Craiova Regional Championship in 1959–60, but fell short of promotion to Divizia B, placing 3rd in a play-off in Ploiești behind Aurul Brad and Chimia Govora. A merger with CFR Craiova’s football section created CFR Electroputere, which took over the railway club’s Divizia B spot for 1960–61. That second-tier stay lasted just one season, ending in relegation with a 13th-place finish in Series II, though they reached the Cupa României Round of 32, losing 2–4 to CCA București.
Afterwards, the team competed as Electroputere in the Oltenia Regional Championship. The squad featured Țecu Smarandache, Ion Belu, Vasile Vrejotis, Octavian Romeo, Venus Ciocîlteu, Ștefan Anghel, Matei Constantin, Stelian Chilom, Nicu Constantin, Ion Drăgan, and Ion Militaru. A 2nd-place finish in 1961–62 was followed by a 3rd-place finish in 1962–63, which earned promotion to the newly re-established Divizia C. Other players from that period were Nicolae Stere, Vică Oprea, Lili Popescu, and Virgil Resciuc.
