History

The team was founded in 1994 after the old CB Canarias club, facing severe financial problems, merged with other teams from Tenerife to create the new Tenerife Canarias club, which played only two seasons in the Liga EBA, then the second tier of Spanish basketball. Dissatisfied individuals formed the new CB 1939 Canarias, inheriting the club's colors and logo. In 2012, Iberostar Canarias won the LEB Oro championship and earned promotion to the Liga ACB, but could not promote due to failing to meet the ACB's requirements. One month later, on 20 July 2012, CB 1939 Canarias finally achieved promotion after Lucentum Alicante's vacated place was granted to the club. Alejandro Martínez became head coach in 2003 and led the team through multiple promotions from the LEB Plata to the Liga ACB, resigning in 2015. In the 2016–17 season, Canarias returned to European competition after 28 years. On 29 March 2017, the team qualified for the 2017 Basketball Champions League Final Four, held at its home arena, and won the championship by defeating Banvit, marking the club's first major title. Later that year, Canarias won the 2017 FIBA Intercontinental Cup by beating Guaros de Lara 76–71. Three years later, it won the 2020 FIBA Intercontinental Cup by defeating Virtus Bologna 80–72.
