Lethal Weapon – The Ride

Lethal Weapon – The Ride was a steel inverted roller coaster located at Warner Bros. Movie World on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia. It opened on 26 December 1995 as the first steel inverted roller coaster at an Australian theme park, themed to the Lethal Weapon film series created by Shane Black. The ride was notable for being the first Suspended Looping Coaster by Vekoma to feature an extended layout with a helix before the brake run, referred to as a 'bayern kurve'.

Lore & Background

The ride's queue originally began in a themed Chinatown area with facades such as 'Lee's Martial Arts School' and various shops. Guests then entered a movie-theatre-like hall where they watched sequences from the Lethal Weapon films while waiting. The final queue area was an auto yard with piled cars, graffiti, barking Dobermans, and a seemingly abandoned Shell auto station, where riders received an audio presentation before boarding.

Reader's Guide

In the mid-2000s, the queue was altered to bypass most of the theming except the autoyard, due to declining popularity of both the ride and the film franchise. The revised queue was located in the pathway between the original Lethal Weapon – The Ride entrance and Superman Escape, resulting in a considerably shorter queue. The ride operated with two Vekoma trains, one with red elements and one with blue elements, each holding 20 riders. It closed on 27 January 2012 for an extended maintenance period, after which it was rethemed to Arkham Asylum and reopened on 7 April 2012.
