Simpson was born in Eccles, Greater Manchester, to a Jamaican father and English mother. He came through the Manchester United youth system and was loaned to several clubs before joining Newcastle United permanently in January 2010. He signed for Leicester City in 2014, then newly promoted to the Premier League. He made 30 league appearances in the title-winning 2015–16 season. After leaving Leicester in 2019, he played for Huddersfield Town, Bristol City, and Macclesfield, where he made no appearances before retiring. He had an exhibition boxing match in August 2024 against Danny Aarons, which ended in a split draw.

Simpson is remembered at Leicester City as a key defensive right-back during their 2015–16 Premier League title win. He was not a product of Leicester's academy but joined the club in 2014 from Queens Park Rangers. After Leicester, he played for Huddersfield Town, Bristol City, and Macclesfield, but never for Stoke City.
