"Chapter 22" is the third installment of the third season of the FX series *Legion*, a surrealist superhero thriller based on the Marvel Comics character. It aired on July 8, 2019. The story delves into the past of David Haller’s biological parents, Gabrielle and Charles Xavier.
The plot is set thirty years before the main events. Gabrielle Xavier cares for her infant son David in a mansion while her husband Charles is frequently away on an important journey. Charles, a mutant with telepathic abilities and a World War II veteran, met Gabrielle at an asylum where she was a Holocaust survivor suffering from catatonia. As she improved, they married and had David. Charles is developing a prototype Cerebro to detect mutants, which leads him to Farouk in Morocco. Left alone, Gabrielle begins experiencing delusions and hearing voices—actually future versions of David and Switch, who have traveled too far back in time and cannot communicate clearly. Her sanity deteriorates as a shadow haunts her and baby David. After a panicked call from Charles, who says meeting Farouk was a mistake, Gabrielle is tormented by Farouk and David’s attempts to fight back. David appears as a ghost projection, causing her to faint. Charles returns, sees David’s ghost, and telepathically expels him and Switch to the present. David wants to go back, but Switch is exhausted from the extreme time travel and collapses. Back in the mansion, Charles finds Gabrielle has reverted to catatonia, devastating him. Unbeknownst to him, Farouk has entered David’s mind, possessing him.
In production, the episode was directed by John Cameron and written by Nathaniel Halpern, marking Halpern’s twelfth writing credit and Cameron’s second directing credit. Regarding casting, series creator Noah Hawley had long intended to explore David’s relationship with his father, Charles Xavier. Dan Stevens invited Patrick Stewart to reprise his role, and Stewart expressed willingness. In February 2019, Harry Lloyd was announced to play Xavier, debuting in this episode. Hawley said the character was essential to David’s origin story, as David is an adopted boy needing to know his true identity.
