Super-battleship

A continent of steel and fire, too slow to flee and too vast to ignore.

The super-battleship (超弩級戦艦) is the largest and most heavily armed class of warship in the Legend of the Galactic Heroes universe. Far exceeding a standard battleship in displacement, armament, and crew complement, it represents the ultimate expression of capital-ship design: a slow, colossal platform bristling with the most powerful main guns aadverse fleet can field. Both the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Navy commission them, though in limited numbers due to their staggering cost and the industrial capacity required to build one.

Lore & Background

In a universe where fleets number in the thousands of ships, the super-battleship occupies a singular niche. It is not a workhorse; it is a statement. Where a battleship projects authority and a carrier projects reach, the super-battleship projects sheer, overwhelming lethality. Its main guns can shatter a battleship at ranges that would be suicidal for smaller craft, making it the natural centerpiece of any fleet the admiral wishes to anchor the line around. Admirals on both sides treat the presence of a super-battleship in an enemy formation as a force multiplier that reshapes their tactical calculus: concentrate fire on it, or risk having your own line broken by its broadsides.

The class embodies the strategic philosophy of both major powers. For the Empire, it is an extension of the autocratic principle—concentrate overwhelming force at a single point and let the enemy's will crumble. For the Free Planets, it is a pragmatic acknowledgment that, however much their doctrine prizes maneuver and distributed firepower, a single platform capable of delivering a killing blow to any capital ship in the enemy line remains indispensable. In both navies, super-battleships are few, precious, and often assigned to the flagship of the fleet commander.

Their vulnerability is well understood. A super-battleship's mass makes it slow to accelerate, slow to turn, and slow to evade. A skilled opponent who can bring a concentrated volley to bear—destroyers in a pincer, fighters in a saturation attack, or a battleship group closing to point-blank range—can turn the fleet's pride into its gravestone. This tension between invincibility and fragility is a recurring theme whenever one appears on the battlefield.

In Their Own Story

Admiral's log, 487th year of the Free Planets. The super-battleship hung in the void like a black continent, its hull scarred by three previous engagements. Through the bridge's long observation glass, the Imperial line was still two light-minutes out, a ribbon of red and gold against the starfield. The gunnery officer reported all main turrets locked, secondary batteries sweeping the arc. A junior officer at the tactical station whispered, almost to himself, 'If we miss this window, there won't be a second.' The admiral did not answer. She simply watched the enemy vanguard begin to wheel, and felt the old, familiar weight of a decision that would outlive her. The super-battleship's engines groaned—a sound the crew felt in their bones more than heard—and the great ship began, slowly, inexorably, to turn its face toward the enemy. Two hundred thousand souls aboard held their breath. The guns did not. They were already loading.

Reader's Guide

In fleet composition, the super-battleship serves as the anchor of the line and, in many formations, the physical flagship around which the admiral organizes his or her command. It is typically positioned at the center or rear of the main battle line, where its slow speed is less a liability and its long-range main guns can dictate the terms of engagement. Escorting destroyers and frigates screen it against fast-attack craft, while battleships and carriers operate in its supporting arc.

Key specifications are relative rather than absolute in the series: it is the largest, slowest, and most heavily armed class. Its main guns outrange and out-punch those of a standard battleship by a significant margin, but its acceleration and turning radius are the worst in the fleet. It cannot outrun a destroyer screen, cannot dodge a fighter swarm, and cannot reposition quickly if the battle's geometry shifts. It is, in essence, a fixed battery that happens to be able to move.

Both the Imperial Navy and the Free Planets Navy field super-battleships, though in small numbers. They appear in major fleet engagements throughout the series, often as the centerpiece of the opposing commander's formation. Their presence in a battle signals that the engagement is of the highest strategic priority—neither side commits a super-battleship to a skirmish.

Strategically, the class reflects each faction's philosophy: the Empire's preference for concentrated, crushing force and the Free Planets' pragmatic blend of maneuver doctrine with the acknowledgment that a single, decisive killing blow can end a battle. Across the series timeline, the class remains largely unchanged in concept—technology advances incrementally, but the fundamental trade-off of mass, firepower, and speed persists, keeping the super-battleship both the crown jewel and the most dangerous prize on any battlefield.
