The Baseball Bat is a close-combat melee weapon introduced in Left 4 Dead 2. It can turn up in every campaign and usually shares spawn points with the Cricket Bat where both appear. It began life as a pre-order bonus: if one player on a team had pre-ordered the game, a bat appeared in every safe room and did not vanish when picked up, so the whole team could take one. Access was later tied to The Passing DLC and finally made free to anyone playing online, after which the bat followed the normal one-per-spawn melee rules.

Lore & Background

Sound-script entries suggest a baseball bat was planned as a bonus weapon for the original Left 4 Dead before being removed. Early in Left 4 Dead 2's development the bat was metal, which is why the first trailer used the same metallic ding as the Scout's bat in Team Fortress 2; the released bat is wooden and its sounds were changed to match. Pre-ordering Left 4 Dead 2 also unlocked Bill's beret for Team Fortress 2.

Reader's Guide

The bat offers good range and swing speed with consistent hit detection, and its swings obstruct the player's view less than some other melee weapons. It cannot cut a Smoker's tongue, its second swing has a much smaller hitbox than the first, and it is a poor choice against Boomers because the bile showers the attacker and nearby Survivors. The bat is not required for the CLUB DEAD achievement.
