Terry Manning was born in Oklahoma City and lived in El Paso, Texas, before moving as a teenager to Memphis, Tennessee. At Central High School he was an all-city quarterback and ran track; at Memphis State University he captained the soccer team and played junior varsity basketball. Before moving to Memphis, he played guitar and sang with local bands in El Paso, including sitting in with Bobby Fuller and leading the Wild Ones.

In Memphis, Manning worked at Stax Records and Ardent Studios as an engineer and producer. He was part of Al Bell's production team for the Staple Singers, responsible for hits such as 'Heavy Makes You Happy,' 'Respect Yourself,' and 'I'll Take You There.' He befriended Jimmy Page in 1966 during a Yardbirds tour, and Page later insisted that Atlantic Records destroy incorrect album covers for Led Zeppelin III to credit Manning's engineering contribution. Manning also licensed his own solo album, Home Sweet Home, on Stax's Enterprise label in 1970.

Manning moved to London in the mid-1980s and worked at Abbey Road Studios. In 1992 he moved to Nassau, Bahamas, to partner with Chris Blackwell at Compass Point Studios, which he operated for over 20 years. He released several albums in the 2010s, including West Texas Skyline (2013), Heaven Knows (2015), Planets (2016), Playin' in Elvis' House (2019), and Red And Black (2025).
