The Alpine A480 is a sports prototype racing car that competed in the FIA World Endurance Championship's Hypercar class during the 2021 and 2022 seasons. It is notable as a rebadged version of the Rebellion R13, itself a variation of the Oreca 07, which was originally built to LMP1 specifications and later grandfathered into the Hypercar class under a special allowance for non-hybrid LMP1 cars.

Lore & Background

The Alpine A480 originated as the Rebellion R13, a sports prototype built by French constructor Oreca for Swiss team Rebellion Racing to compete in the LMP1 class. After the 2019–20 WEC season, Rebellion reduced its effort and the car was later rebadged by Alpine following a report by Auto Hebdo on September 10, 2020, which was confirmed by Alpine on September 12. The entry was formalized on January 21, 2021, with the car renamed Alpine A480. The driver lineup was announced on January 26, 2021, consisting of André Negrão, Nicolas Lapierre, and Matthieu Vaxivière.

To meet Hypercar homologation, the car underwent significant changes. It was required to use a single aero kit—the Le Mans-focused low-downforce kit—at all circuits, a departure from LMP1 practice of mixing high- and low-downforce kits. It also entered the Hypercar Balance of Performance system, which set a lower performance target than LMP1, adding roughly ten seconds per lap at Circuit de la Sarthe. The car's fuel tank, originally designed for LMP2's 75-liter capacity, could not accommodate the 12-lap fuel stints required by Hypercar rules; during the Rebellion era it achieved only 11 laps. Oreca could not find a workaround compatible with homologation in time for the inaugural race at Spa, resulting in an extra fuel stop compared to Toyota.

For the 2021 season, the initial BoP set the A480's weight at 930 kg (up from LMP1's 824 kg) and peak power at 610 hp (450 kW). Alpine scored podiums in all six races, took pole position and fastest lap at the 8 Hours of Portimão, and finished second in the Hypercar World Endurance Championship with 128 points. The driver crew finished third in the drivers' championship with the same points tally. On February 16, 2022, Alpine announced the car would compete for a final season with the same driver lineup.

Reader's Guide

The Alpine A480 represents a transitional chapter in the FIA World Endurance Championship, bridging the LMP1 and Hypercar eras. As a grandfathered non-hybrid LMP1 car, it was allowed to compete in the new Hypercar class under special rules that aimed to equalize performance through a Balance of Performance system. The car's significance lies in its role as the only privateer-derived entry to challenge the factory Toyota GR010 Hybrid during the initial Hypercar seasons, consistently scoring podiums in every race of 2021 despite a fundamental disadvantage: its fuel tank, originally sized for LMP2 regulations, could not physically hold enough fuel to match Toyota's stint length, forcing an extra pit stop per race. This limitation, combined with the weight increase from 824 kg to 930 kg and power reduction to 610 hp, meant the A480 never overcame the stint-length deficit. Nevertheless, it secured second place in the Hypercar World Endurance Championship in 2021 and returned for a final season in 2022 with the same driver lineup. The car's legacy is that of a stopgap competitor that demonstrated the challenges of adapting older LMP1 machinery to a new regulatory framework, while providing a competitive privateer presence in the top class of endurance racing.
